5 reasons PortAventura could be your favourite European Theme Park

Here’s 5 reasons that PortAventura could be your favourite European Theme Park!

Over the years we’ve made a number of trips to PortAventura, usually staying in a resort near Salou as part of a bucket and spade holiday. If you didn’t know, PortAventura is located close to Barcelona in Spain but more specifically close to the seaside resort of Salou on the Costa Daurada therefore combining sun, sea and theme parks! In this article I’ll be focusing on PortAventura Park as opposed to Ferrari Land.

Here’s 5 reasons why we think that PortAventura could become your favourite European Theme Park!

Shambhala

Let’s not mess about and get straight to the point. Shambhala is a special rollercoaster, a true airtime machine. Standing at 249 feet and reaching speeds above 80mph, this ride provides thrills and spills from start to finish. The lift hill offers views across Salou and out to sea while the first drop is steep, reasonably forceful and finishes with a fun head chopper. At speed you ride through large airtime hills before reaching a sharp turnaround section. You enter a splash down section which is very welcome in the heat before heading back to the station. I’ve said before that for nostalgia reasons that The Big One is my favourite tall coaster but Shambhala is simply spectacular.

Theming

PortaAventura is a great looking park. While the entrance is quite simple you are soon greeted by a lake and a beautiful Mediterranean section to the park. Timed right as you glance over the lake you will see Furius Baco powering its way a banked turn over the lake before the train returns to the station. One of our favourite sections of the park is the China section which offers relaxing water gardens and beautiful music to listen to as you enjoy a cool drink before heading to Dragon Khan. For lunch we often head to the Wild West area of the park and have a meal on the porch of the Iron Horse Restaurant where we watch the world go by.

Yard of Beer

This is a pretty straight forward one but at PortAventura you can buy yourself a Yard of Beer, even better that they come in souvenir cups that you can keep. What’s better than sipping on an ice cold Beer in a sun drenched theme park?

Ride Selection

PortAventura has a great range of rides that suit all tastes. From the huge and thrilling Shambhala and Dragon Khan to the fun family Sesame Street themed rides which by the way, lone adults can ride, or so a friend told me…

The park also boasts a great selection of water rides, perfect for the hot weather from a fun rapids ride to a surprisingly thrilling log flume and our personal favourite, The Flying Fish!

Halloween

Despite the heat still usually being around 25 degrees Celsius in October, PortAventura put on a great show for Halloween. From interactive and roaming actors such as the ever popular Beetlejuice to the highly impressive decorations, Halloween is a fantastic time to visit. The highlight for us is always the Halloween parade held towards the end of the day.
